Third grade studied traditional folk art paintings of Mexico, specifically Amate Paintings. We discussed the material these paintings are made from, tree bark. We talked about the subject matter of the paintings: everyday life, folk tales, nature etc… We identified principles and elements of design: line, shape, color and pattern. Students created their own Amate painting, depicting images of springtime and nature.
