First Grade Monoprint/Reflection

This unit was titled:  The world we live in.

First graders learned about warm and cool colors on the color wheel.  We then looked at landscape photography and pointed out warm and cool colors in nature.

Students also studied several ways to draw trees.  They used a technique called monoprinting to create a warm and cool reflection print.

Kindergarten Skyline

Kindergarten studied the artwork, The Starry Night, by Vincent Van Gogh.  We also talked about warm and cool colors, what are they and when do we see them in our world?  For instance:  We may see warm colors inside a volcano.  We may see cool colors when looking underwater.

Students began by painting either a warm or cool background in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.  Then we used our fine motor skills to cut out shapes for our city skyline.

Abstract Expressionism in Grade 5

Fifth graders are studying the art form of Abstract Expressionism.  We looked at artworks by Jackson Pollock, Hans Hoffman, Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, Morris Lewis, Helen Frankethaler, etc...  Students combined the works of two abstract expressionism artists and their own personal style to create a "one of a kind" greeting card.

Students were encouraged to use several materials including:  paint, markers, oil pastels etc...  These items were put in stations throughout the room and students were encouraged to move from place to place and experiment with all materials.  They were reluctant at first, but once they started they were excited to have artistic freedom.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is busy learning about primary colors, geometric shapes and printing techniques.  They combined all these elements to create, one-of-a-kind, modern works of art. Bravo!
